WHILE ATTEMPTING COLLEGE I survived several years working tables and Bartending at Butterfield Overland Express. Wednesdays mtn smoke owned the place.Bill Schumate the owner and Norma his wife always got a big table w/friends and loved you guys.
The two big guys COULD play the flatop and you name it. we always packed the wed night evolution of acoustic inspiration. This young tall skinny dude had serious chops usually reserved for older studio pickers in Nashville. I eventually moved on to graduate school. a decade or two later when Vince HIT I wondered if that was the same musical doogie howser from Nw Classen we saw play Many wed night frenzied they were real TOSSED large cash tips as a matter of course. I often made my entire rent off of those Wednesday shows. You all became the best night of our week.

I would like to thank Mountain Smoke for supporting Amtrak's "Heartland Flyer". Thank you for using our train to play music for the people to enjoy. It was super nice of the band to play music while one of employees was proposed to. That was a very nice touch. Mountain Smoke is top notch in my book.

I've been around the world 7 times on a whale boat and have managed to see thousands of bands play all over the world.
But the absolute best of them all is Mountain Smoke, year after year after year.

I forgot to remember to post this, but as "The Bergmeister Says",Don't worry, "Ts", it's just "Early Altz"!!! As I have mentioned to all of you guys and gal, my "Cuz", Lamar Fike, aka, "The Memphis Mafia/"Elvis Aaron Presley" had made the statement, "That, as we all know, Lamar was with "Elvis" for 20 + years, stating that he had heard the "Best", and that "Mountain Smoke Band" was "The Best Group" that he had ever had the privilege of [Listening To]. He knew you guys personally, and that was "The Hear Felt Truth" from "Him About You Guys" music and abilities and Great Musical Presentation. As you know, Lamar had a "Great Ear for Hit Songs" as he brought many Hits To his "Soul Mate" "Elvis Aaron Presley", as you kmnow he lived @ Graceland for a year and a half before "Elvis" shipped out to Germany from Fort Hood, Texas. As we have all known each other "Since Hitler was a Corporal", then this is a true analogy of your great musical accomplishment over the years. And "Lamar and I" have truly loved and enjoyed your music. And as you guys know "KD" did not take advantage of an "Invite by Elvis and Lamar" to attend, be backstage and at the Skirvin with "Elvis" for the 1975 OKC "Elvis on Tour" @ OKC, as he was playing out of town, and wouldn't come in for the "Show"????? Lamar and "Elvis would always say when they knew a group or music was great, "They Are Stronger Than Tarzan's Armpits", and Lamar said that about The Mountain Smoke Band. Thanks for "A Great Musical Ride and your Friendship" from "Lamar and Ts"!!!!!!! "TCB"!!!!!!!

October 2, 2013

While attending Okla State Univ in about 1974 or 1975, some friends and I stopped in a small bar on "the strip" in Stillwater, Ok. On stage in this very crowed bar playing Bluegrass music was a group called Mountain Smoke. This was my first introduction to Bluegrass and to Mountain Smoke. I bought their album and still have it in my collection. I have been a fan of both ever since. Can't wait to see them again this week.

August 29, 2013

I just browsed through the "Through the Years" and found my Uncle Russ Christopher from the old days in the pictures. When I was a kid growing up in OKC I remember one time the band went to Washington DC and played for President Carter. Uncle Russ taught me to two-step to Don William's "Tulsa Time" at my Momo's house in OKC. Russ is doing fine, living in Texas; saw him couple months ago in Houston. Good memories!

I found my copy of "On Blue Ridge" this weekend and listened to it for the first time in 25 years. "Wow" is all I can say. I remember the summer of 1976 when Mountain Smoke upstaged The Charlie Daniel's Band with a killer rendition of Orange Blossom Special. Happy to see you guys are still going!

I was leaving the Oklahoma City Arts Festival when I heard music playing and thought I'd just listen a while. I stayed until you finished playing. It was such fun listening to the song about the armadillo. I laughed more than I have in a long time. Thanks for the fun. The song about America was great. Is it on one of your CDs? I've never heard of your band before. I don't listen to much country music but this was REALLY GREAT music. I usually don't care much for country music but yours is wonderful. Thanks for going to the Arts Festival 2010. Can't believe I'm missed your music all these years. Sorry. God's speed.

March 8, 2010

I heard Jimmy Gyles play at the Johnny High Country Music revue on Saturday, March 6, 2019. He was incredible. The rendition of "How Great Thou Art" was way beyond anything I have ever heard. Has it been recorded? I would really like to have a recording of that arrangement.

February 24, 2010

After my recent move I discovered an unopened 33LP of "Lettin it Slip Away". Needless to say, I had to spin it on the old turntable and it brought back a lot of good memories. Late 70's, Whiskey River on Central Expressway in Dallas plus many venues here. I think Hal was at Fidelity Bank. Good to hear you are still going. Gives us all hope. Thanks.

John Parker

January 7, 2010

I love the music. Bill Perry is a former PCHS classmate. Arrange the music so Rich gets in a few drum solos now and then.

December 29, 2009

In the late 70's Billy's brother let me follow you guys around and what a great experience.(Although back then I didn't realize how great you all were.) Went to Winfield, recording studio, etc. I remember a mustard colored VW van(Tom) and that unforgetable voice of Regina 30ish years later. And Jimmy, I had a huge crush on you, even though Mike was my beau. I heard Billy play in Dec. and even though he was ill, he was still fascinating to hear(and just as good as when I watched you in guitar and banjo contest so many years ago). I still have my Bluegrass Jam album and love it. You inspire people even after 30 years.

Mike Brouillette

October 29, 2009

Guess 1981 or there abouts got forgotten in the history of Smoke. I do remember some pretty good music we recorded and played during this short time. Really sorry that you don't take credit for that too, the Pop Goes the Country taping and the like. Guess there was a lot of baggage with that though, I never hear from Jim either. Tom and Randy, sorry I lost touch with you and Dave, Stan Chase and the rest. Best Regards !
